The Secrets of Web Design
by Jordan McPelt
There is no way around it: if you have a website for personal or business use, you need to learn the basics of web design in order to find an appealing scheme that will attract visitors to your rather than drive them away. The secret to the success of your website depends on the way you have designed your site.
The first and foremost thing you will want to do in order to have a clean looking design is to ditch those elementary page counters. If you need to track the statistics of your website, find a host that will give you this information easily and quickly. They will probably also have more detailed information for you rather than just what a simple page counter can give you. Most of the time, page counters are seen as tacky. No customer will care how many people are visiting your site. They only care about what your site can provide for them.
If you want to get the attention of potential customers, it is a good idea to have a good web design and a quality product or service to sell. Do not try to bring people into your site with blinking pictures and flashing text. This will only make you look desperate to attract attention. Many people realize after looking at a lot of websites that the sites that use these gimmicks probably are not selling a quality product. They put more of an effort into getting people to their site rather than providing their customers with what they need.
Another thing that will annoy your potential customers is making them install a different browser or plug-in to view parts or all of your site. Try to keep your site as simple as possible. If you want to use multimedia to present your product or service, you can but put it is a format that most people can access without having to download anything beforehand.
You will also want to make your website make sense to the people who are viewing it. Make sure your titles are clear and they describe exactly what you are selling or representing. If you make your page titles unclear, potential customers can be turned away because they think that you are using misleading tactics in order to get them to stay on your site. In the same vein, do not try to use cheap tricks in order to fool the search engines to bring up your page more often. Just because your site now falls at the top of the list for a specific keyword, that does not mean you will get any more business. In fact, once people are fooled by your trick, they will be less likely to be fooled again. Try to be as honest as possible when making a good website design.
Web design is not a tricky subject. It just takes a little time to learn what tactics work and which ones will drive your customers right out the door. Be honest, make it simple, and you will have a successful website for your online business.
